lil remains: My Year of Buying Nothing Lee Simpson, 2015-09-29 Lee Simpson may seem like an unlikely candidate to don the mantel of anti-consumerist prophet. She is, after all, the former publisher of Canada’s most successful women’s lifestyles magazine, Chatelaine. But that is just the first of many surprising things about her new book My Year of Buying Nothing. In the 1980s and ’90s, Simpson oversaw the heady days of women’s magazine publishing. Although proud of the excellent journalism featured in her magazines, and of the pioneering work of the editors she worked with, her “primary role as senior executive was to ensure that a maximum number of advertising pages got sold.” “I was part of the data analysis and market research conglomerate that helped consumer predators know your weaknesses and exploit them mercilessly.” In My Year of Buying Nothing, Simpson invites readers into her world to witness first hand the struggles she faced, the decisions and compromises she had to make, and the epiphanies and wisdom she won during her year-long attempt to shed her “consumer” skin and live a more sustainable, more authentic, more earth-friendly life. Who better to choose as a guide to a new, healthier post-consumer lifestyle than someone who is intimately familiar with the pitfalls and dangers of the starting place, and the challenges of the way forward |
lil remains: Focus on Phonological Acquisition S.J. Hannahs, Martha Young-Scholten, 1997-12-31 The publication of this edited volume comes at a time when interest in the acquisition of phonology by both children learning a first language and adults learning a second is starting to swell. The ten contributions, from established scholars and relative newcomers alike, provide a comprehensive demonstration of the progress being made in the field through the theory-based analysis of both spontaneous and experimental acquisition data involving a number of first and second languages including English, French, German, Korean, Polish and Spanish. Aimed at those active in phonology and its acquisition, yet written to be accessible to the non-specialist as well, the volume carefully lays out the various theoretical frameworks in which the authors work such as Feature Geometry, Lexical Phonology, Non-Linear Phonology, Prosodic Phonology, and Optimality Theory. |

The world has moved on from that terrible day. Nearly 20 years later, it has faded into a dull memory for most people. But a chance encounter rekindles Ben's interest in the event, and the inconsistencies that always bothered him. Thoughtful, impeccably researched and dazzling in its writing, this is Ben's story, the story of what happened to his fiancé, and the story of all that happened on 9/11. lil remains: What Remains Tracey Lee, 2015-12-19 The OHara family has lived on Lake Road for generationssince 1825, in fact. Their fates have been as varied as the lakes depths, but 1975 was a pivotal time in the life of the family. It was the year that Lily OHara was born and her mother, Moya, and brother, Brannen, disappeared. It was assumed that the two had drowned, but the bodies were never recovered. Her father, Cillian, could offer no explanation for the disappearance of his wife and son. The police and locals believed he was guilty of murder, but without bodies no charges could be laid. The young father attempted to raise his baby daughter with the help of his unmarried brother and sister, Darcy and Billie. The weight of loss and presumed guilt drove Cillian to take his own life when Lily was only nine months old. The novel commences with twenty-six-year-old Lily watching the now diminishing lake and thinking about her life. She tries to avoid dwelling on her familys demise. Billie and Darcy are now dead, and she knows little about the events from 1975. But the past can never be truly silenced, and the noise of those terrible losses roars back to life when bones are discovered in the drying mud of the now-empty lake. Lily is an archivist and curator. In her working life she makes sense of the past lives of other people by assigning meaning to the artefacts they leave behind. It becomes her mission to make sense of her fathers actions by examining what evidence remains. She will also come to accept that she, like all of us, has been shaped by the past. She must decide if she will be consumed or strengthened by what she finds out. |

lil remains: "Baad Bitches" and Sassy Supermamas Stephane Dunn, 2010-10-01 Blaxploitation action narratives as well as politically radical films like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song typically portrayed black women as trifling bitches compared to the supermacho black male heroes. But starting in 1973, the emergence of baad bitches and sassy supermamas reversed the trend as self-assured, empowered, and tough black women took the lead in the films Cleopatra Jones, Coffy, and Foxy Brown. Stephane Dunn unpacks the intersecting racial, sexual, and gender politics underlying the representations of racialized bodies, masculinities, and femininities in early 1970s black action films, with particular focus on the representation of black femininity. Recognizing a distinct moment in the history of African American representation in popular cinema, Dunn analyzes how it emerged from a radical political era influenced by the Black Power movement and feminism. Dunn also engages blaxploitation's legacy in contemporary hip-hop culture, as suggested by the music’s disturbing gender politics and the baad bitch daughters of Foxy Brown and Cleopatra Jones, rappers Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim. |
lil remains: Uncle Cheryl Thompson, 2021-03-02 From martyr to insult, how “Uncle Tom” has influenced two centuries of racial politics. Jackie Robinson, President Barack Obama, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, O.J. Simpson and Christopher Darden have all been accused of being an Uncle Tom during their careers. How, why, and with what consequences for our society did Uncle Tom morph first into a servile old man and then to a racial epithet hurled at African American men deemed, by other Black people, to have betrayed their race? Uncle Tom, the eponymous figure in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s sentimental anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was a loyal Christian who died a martyr’s death. But soon after the best-selling novel appeared, theatre troupes across North America and Europe transformed Stowe’s story into minstrel shows featuring white men in blackface. In Uncle, Cheryl Thompson traces Tom’s journey from literary character to racial trope. She explores how Uncle Tom came to be and exposes the relentless reworking of Uncle Tom into a nostalgic, racial metaphor with the power to shape how we see Black men, a distortion visible in everything from Uncle Ben and Rastus The Cream of Wheat chef to Shirley Temple and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson to Bill Cosby. In Donald Trump’s post-truth America, where nostalgia is used as a political tool to rewrite history, Uncle makes the case for why understanding the production of racial stereotypes matters more than ever before. |

lil remains: Mae West Jill Watts, 2003-04-17 Why don't you come up and see me sometime? Mae West invited and promptly captured the imagination of generations. Even today, years after her death, the actress and author is still regarded as the pop archetype of sexual wantonness and ribald humor. But who was this saucy starlet, a woman who was controversial enough to be jailed, pursued by film censors and banned from the airwaves for the revolutionary content of her work, and yet would ascend to the status of film legend? Sifting through previously untapped sources, author Jill Watts unravels the enigmatic life of Mae West, tracing her early years spent in the Brooklyn subculture of boxers and underworld figures, and follows her journey through burlesque, vaudeville, Broadway and, finally, Hollywood, where she quickly became one of the big screen's most popular--and colorful--stars. Exploring West's penchant for contradiction and her carefully perpetuated paradoxes, Watts convincingly argues that Mae West borrowed heavily from African American culture, music, dance and humor, creating a subversive voice for herself by which she artfully challenged society and its assumptions regarding race, class and gender. Viewing West as a trickster, Watts demonstrates that by appropriating for her character the black tradition of double-speak and signifying, West also may have hinted at her own African-American ancestry and the phenomenon of a black woman passing for white. This absolutely fascinating study is the first comprehensive, interpretive account of Mae West's life and work. It reveals a beloved icon as a radically subversive artist consciously creating her own complex image. |

lil remains: A Grind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste N.S. Hood, 2022-08-04 There are two roads to take on this journey called Life. The right way, which is summed up at times as “The Good Life.” On the other hand, some people take a left which is “The Street Life.” A lot of young niggas take this route not always because they want to, but because that’s the only road in the middle of nowhere. America was built on the same. Come ups that are considered crimes today. Fraud, Robbery, Murder and Grand larceny. The problem is the youth is more up front with the truth, too much exposure can effect an entire generation. That can make life crazy. The unbelievable is always reality. The unpredictable is always anticipated. Funny thing is only a selected few realize what they see is only an illusion, what they need is always confused with what they want. Priority is always confused with “I’ll do it eventually.” If only we could see are mistakes for what they are. No one is perfect, Do to our creator, but if there was a such thing as an equal perfect would the world still be kaotic with envy and hatred? Of course, nothing has changed. It’s still a war being waged amongst one another everyday. Individuals don’t think individually they let others control their mind because they are weak minded. They are controlled, by people around them, almost like a child that depends on you to feed them whatever you give them, they are trusting you to give them something to fulfill their hunger. They eat it without question or suspicion just like the people that you surround yourself with. They feed you whatever they think you mind will eat. If you let them, they will feed you whatever they went. Whether its lies, the truth, or entertainment; whatever to fulfill the satisfaction of acceptance. |

The next section demonstrates both the opportunities and the complex challenges posed to the clinician by the array of new medical, surgical, and pharmacological therapies. lil remains: An Autoethnography of Letter Writing and Relationships Through Time Jennifer L. Adams, 2023-06-27 An Autoethnography of Letter Writing and Relationships Through Time: Finding Our Perfect Moon is about love letters, stories, and the ability of words to bring people together across time and physical space. Weaving together edited and annotated letters between a young couple in the 1930s with interludes of autoethnographic reflection, the book relates the author’s experiences as she has negotiated this project over 20 years. Reading the letters is a sepia-toned window into the very private world of two young, well-educated Jewish-American people who lived their lives against the backdrop of the Jazz Age, the Great Depression, and Prohibition. The author uses reflective autoethnographic interludes to tell the story of finding the letters and to explore the significance of letters as a communicative genre. Adams considers the ethical implications of being a researcher eavesdropping on private moments in others' lives, and she explores the function of dialogue in the development of the romantic relationship that unfolds in the letters and between the letters and her. The author also advocates for the everyday relational communication practices that collectively comprise life's most important experiences. Students and researchers interested in letter-writing, autoethnography, and relationship development will find relevance in this book. It will also be of value to those interested in letter collections, the ethical implications of intimate research on people from the past who cannot offer consent, the role of nostalgia in interpersonal communication, and anyone who thrills at a love story told from primary documents from the past. |
lil remains: In the Arms of Baby Hop Kenneth Attaway, 2006-10 Many times in my adult life, I have had what I would call an awake out-of-body experience. During these times, I was peeking in at my life in a dream state; thinking this cannot be my life. I found myself asking the questions of what happened to the child who outsmarted the world and what happened to the teen who had all the answers and confidence to boot, and the young adult who never settled for can't. Well, somewhere along the way, the only thing left of who I was once was, were just shreds of an almost non-existent life. Now, don't get me wrong, there were some good times along the way, but it certainly was not always smooth sailing. But what came later in life was no comparison to the early years. Not that long ago, my life was filled with disappointment, brokenness, worry, anxiety, and fear. I survived breakups and breakdowns, sadness and pain, grief and loss beyond description, all of which led to a one-way ticket to Depression Central. Getting off the road to depression was very difficult for me, but there is no job too hard for God. If you can relate to the paralyzing despair that I went through, then please know that I fellowship with you and understand the grip depression and anxiety can have on your life. However, I want you to know that your destination does not have to be a one-way ticket to the land of despair, instead, your journey can bring you to a place of joy and peace if you simply trust and believe in God. |
lil remains: The Game Remains but the Players Change!!! P. Los, 2019-12-01 This book is about seeing the real world and people from another perspective, and not the imaginary world of how people and the world ought to be. Real street players and men of business don't see the real world with a mindset of hopes and dreams, nor with mediocre views. They see the world as it is, and how people truly are. Real players and business men see people based on their desires, wants and emotional experiences. Some of those experiences whether past or present has forced people to become rigid and selfish for survival, protection, getting money, secret relationships, emotionally with-drawn due to their emotional and psychological pain from past experiences, and dealing with those trust issues to conceal and never reveal themselves and always have the upper hand in any situation. This book is based on reality and not theories. |
