nextprof nexus: Cognitive Biases in Visualizations Geoffrey Ellis, 2018-09-27 This book brings together the latest research in this new and exciting area of visualization, looking at classifying and modelling cognitive biases, together with user studies which reveal their undesirable impact on human judgement, and demonstrating how visual analytic techniques can provide effective support for mitigating key biases. A comprehensive coverage of this very relevant topic is provided though this collection of extended papers from the successful DECISIVe workshop at IEEE VIS, together with an introduction to cognitive biases and an invited chapter from a leading expert in intelligence analysis. Cognitive Biases in Visualizations will be of interest to a wide audience from those studying cognitive biases to visualization designers and practitioners. It offers a choice of research frameworks, help with the design of user studies, and proposals for the effective measurement of biases. The impact of human visualization literacy, competence and human cognition on cognitive biases are also examined, as well as the notion of system-induced biases. The well referenced chapters provide an excellent starting point for gaining an awareness of the detrimental effect that some cognitive biases can have on users’ decision-making. Human behavior is complex and we are only just starting to unravel the processes involved and investigate ways in which the computer can assist, however the final section supports the prospect that visual analytics, in particular, can counter some of the more common cognitive errors, which have been proven to be so costly. |

nextprof nexus: The Chief Diversity Officer Damon A. Williams, Katrina C. Wade-Golden, 2023-07-03 This volume addresses the role of chief diversity officers as coordinating and integrating diversity leaders in higher education and other sectors.Having established in a companion volume the parameters for an effective diversity strategy, the authors address such questions as: What is a chief diversity officer? How might we create dynamic chief diversity officer infrastructures? What models of CDO structure exist in the academy? What misperceptions often confound the work of officers and the institutions they work within? What key competencies are necessary to lead as a CDO? How does the CDO role compare across higher education, non-profit, and corporate sectors? And how might the role serve as an important contributor to a collaborative vision for change and transformation in the academy? This book begins by delineating the evolution of the chief diversity officer role in the academy. Drawing on extensive qualitative and quantitative research on CDOs conducted for the purposes of this volume, it describes how the scope and responsibilities are variously defined at the organizations where the position has been created, and offers insights into the complexities and challenges of the role.On the basis of this data and the literature on organizational design and change management, the authors define the requisite skills, knowledge and background to be effective, review the alternative organizational and governance structures under which CDOs operate, and in so doing present the Chief Diversity Officer Development Framework as a basis for recruiting candidates, for structuring the position to succeed, and for providing prospective and incumbent CDOs with a realistic sense of the scope of the role. This title is also available in a set with its companion volume, Strategic Diversity Leadership. |

nextprof nexus: The Law of Outer Space Tanja L. Masson-Zwaan, Stephan Hobe, 2010-09-10 It is a remarkable achievement to write a book that almost four decades after its publication has lost virtually none of its relevance. Manfred Lachs’ famous treatise on the Law of Outer Space was originally published in 1972, yet it is still a classic and must-read text for space law students today, even though copies can nowadays be rarely found. The reissue of this remarkable work is therefore timely indeed. Its aim is to make the brilliance, foresight and clarity of Lachs’ thinking once more easily accessible to a new generation of scholars. Issued on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the International Institute of Space Law, of which Lachs was President, this volume reproduces the original text of Lachs' work in full, with a new preface, introduction and index supplied by the editors. |
nextprof nexus: Scraps of Heaven Arnold Zable, 2016-10-24 It’s 1958 and Australia is becoming a different place. The Melbourne working-class suburb of Carlton is now home to many immigrant families trying to begin new lives and make sense of the old. Romek and Zofia, liberated from the camps in Poland, work hard at the local market, but their love is in ruins. Bloomfield is king and custodian of Curtin Square and is rarely absent from his post. The resplendent Valerio, stylish and soccer-mad, has just arrived from Italy. War veteran Mr Sommers sits alone on his verandah, while Yiddish actors gather at the barber’s to reminisce and curse. Romek and Zofia’s skinny twelve-year-old son Josh takes up boxing and becomes bewitched by the Swedish Girl. But Zofia is tormented, and as she falls further into madness, Josh wonders if she can ever be made whole again. Scraps of Heaven is a stunning evocation of a changing world, where optimism is tinged with sorrow at the raw memories of war. Arnold Zable’s irresistible storytelling becomes a celebration of survival, a reminder that all lives are to be lived and that scraps of heaven can be found everywhere. |

nextprof nexus: Urban Music Education Kate Fitzpatrick-Harnish, 2015-04-09 The prevailing discourse surrounding urban music education suggests the deficit-laden notion that urban school settings are less than, rather than different than, their counterparts. Through the lens of contextually-specific teaching, this book provides a counternarrative on urban music education that encourages urban music teachers to focus on the strengths of their students as their primary resource. Through a combination of research-based strategies and practical suggestions from the author's own experience teaching music in urban settings, the book highlights important issues for teachers to consider, such as culturally relevant pedagogy, the opportunity gap, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, musical content, curricular change, music program development, student motivation, and strategies for finding inspiration and support. Throughout the book, the stories of five highly successful urban music teachers are highlighted, providing practical, real-world advice for music teachers across the domains of general, choral, band, and string music teaching. Recognizing that the term urban can encompass a wide variety of different school and community settings, this book challenges all teachers who work in under-served and under-resourced settings to take a critical look at their own music classroom and work to tailor their pedagogy to meet the particular needs of their students. |
nextprof nexus: Ndtv Frauds Sree Iyer, 2017-03-07 This book is a classic example of how media organizations misuse, violate laws in connivance with crony capitalists, pliant law firms and politicians to amass personal wealth. This is a narrative of how two Promoters of NDTV along with key top management colluded over the years with government functionaries and politicians to break laws, evade taxes and deceive shareholders of a public listed company. All this obviously through political patronage and wheeling-and-dealing as part of the Lutyens club and how they created a biased public discourse for a select elite class. In the minds of the Indian citizen, there is a space and respect for media. Using the halo of journalism and under the garb of Freedom of Press, media owners misuse their position and in the end, degrade the values of journalism. On several occasions media became the tool of false propaganda, blackmailing and illegal money making with the blessing of uncouth politicians and corporate icons with hidden agendas. This ought to be exposed and that is the reason for this book. |
nextprof nexus: Good with Words Patrick Barry, 2019-05-31 If your success at work or in school depends on your ability to communicate persuasively in writing, you'll want to get Good with Words. Based on a course that law students at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago have called outstanding, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, and the best course I have ever taken, the book brings together a collection of concepts, exercises, and examples that have also helped improve the advocacy skills of people pursuing careers in many other fields--from marketing, to management, to medicine. There is nobody better than Patrick Barry when it comes to breaking down how to write and edit. His techniques don't just make you sound better. They make you think better. I'm jealous of the people who get to take his classes. --Professor Lisa Bernstein, University of Chicago Law School and Oxford University Center for Corporate Regulation Whenever I use Patrick Barry's materials in my class, the student reaction is the same: 'We want more of them.' --Professor Dave Babbe, UCLA School of Law Working one-on-one with Patrick Barry should be mandatory for all lawyers, regardless of seniority. This book is the next best thing. --Purvi Patel, Partner at Morrison Foerster LLP I am proud to say that, when it comes to writing, I speak Patrick Barry. What I mean is that I use, pretty much every day, the writing vocabulary and techniques he offers in this great book. So read it. Share it. And then, if you can, teach it. There are a lot of good causes in the world that could use a new generation of great advocates. --Professor Bridgette Carr, Assistant Dean of Strategic Initiatives and Director of the Human Trafficking Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School Patrick Barry is my secret weapon. I use his techniques every time I write, and I also teach them to all my students. --Professor Shai Dothan, Copenhagen Faculty of Law I know the materials in this book were originally created for lawyers and law students. But I actually find them really helpful for doctors as well, given that a lot of what I do every day depends on effective communication. There is a tremendous upside to becoming 'Good with Words. --Dr. Ramzi Abboud, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. |
nextprof nexus: Strategic Diversity Leadership Damon A. Williams, 2023-07-03 In today’s world – whether viewed through a lens of educational attainment, economic development, global competitiveness, leadership capacity, or social justice and equity – diversity is not just the right thing to do, it is the only thing to do! Following the era of civil rights in the 1960s and ‘70s, the 1990s and early 21st century have seen both retrenchment and backlash years, but also a growing recognition, particularly in business and the military, that we have to educate and develop the capacities of our citizens from all levels of society and all demographic and social groups to live fulfilling lives in an inter-connected globe. For higher education that means not only increasing the numbers of diverse students, faculty, and staff, but simultaneously pursuing excellence in student learning and development, as well as through research and scholarship – in other words pursuing what this book defines as strategic diversity leadership. The aim is to create systems that enable every student, faculty, and staff member to thrive and achieve to maximum potential within a diversity framework. This book is written from the perspective that diversity work is best approached as an intellectual endeavor with a pragmatic focus on achieving results that takes an evidence-based approach to operationalizing diversity. It offers an overarching conceptual framework for pursuing diversity in a national and international context; delineates and describes the competencies, knowledge and skills needed to take effective leadership in matters of diversity; offers new data about related practices in higher education; and presents and evaluates a range of strategies, organizational structures and models drawn from institutions of all types and sizes. It covers such issues as the reorganization of the existing diversity infrastructure, building accountability systems, assessing the diversity process, and addressing legal threats to implementation. Its purpose is to help strategic diversity leaders combine big-picture thinking with an on-the-ground understanding of organizational reality and work strategically with key stakeholders and allies. This book is intended for presidents, provosts, chief diversity officers or diversity professionals, and anyone who wants to champion diversity and embed its objectives on his or her campus, whether at the level of senior administration, as members of campus organizations or committees, or as faculty, student affairs professionals or students taking a leadership role in making and studying the process of change. This title is also available in a set with its companion volume, The Chief Diversity Officer. |

nextprof nexus: Ferroelectric Domain Walls Jill Guyonnet, 2014-04-08 Using the nano metric resolution of atomic force microscopy techniques, this work explores the rich fundamental physics and novel functionalities of domain walls in ferroelectric materials, the nano scale interfaces separating regions of differently oriented spontaneous polarization. Due to the local symmetry-breaking caused by the change in polarization, domain walls are found to possess an unexpected lateral piezoelectric response, even when this is symmetry-forbidden in the parent material. This has interesting potential applications in electromechanical devices based on ferroelectric domain patterning. Moreover, electrical conduction is shown to arise at domain walls in otherwise insulating lead zirconate titanate, the first such observation outside of multiferroic bismuth ferrite, due to the tendency of the walls to localize defects. The role of defects is then explored in the theoretical framework of disordered elastic interfaces possessing a characteristic roughness scaling and complex dynamic response. It is shown that the heterogeneous disorder landscape in ferroelectric thin films leads to a breakdown of the usual self-affine roughness, possibly related to strong pinning at individual defects. Finally, the roles of varying environmental conditions and defect densities in domain switching are explored and shown to be adequately modelled as a competition between screening effects and pinning. |

nextprof nexus: Tomorrow's Medicine Scientific American Editors, 2014-04-28 One hundred years ago, most of the medical treatments and technologies that we take for granted hadn't even been imagined or were found in the pages of science fiction novels rather than medical journals. Today, on the other hand, medical research often sounds like science fiction. This eBook, Tomorrow's Medicine, looks at some of the more fascinating areas where technology that could transform health is being developed, including cybernetics, regenerative medicine, nanotechnology and genetically tailored treatments. Although many of these advances may not be ready to treat humans for many years, some of them may someday profoundly change—and extend—our lives. In Bionic Connections, for example, D. Kacy Cullen and Douglas Smith discuss synthetic limbs that function as well (or better) than our own. Echoes of the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage abound in Nanomedicine Targets Cancer by James Heath, Mark Davis and Leroy Hood, who examine how miniaturized tools can both measure the molecular interactions of disease and deliver targeted therapies. Several articles discuss different approaches for regeneration, including Grow Your Own Eye, in which author Yoshiki Sasai illustrates how his lab successfully grew a retina from stem cells to A Sweet Solution for Replacing Organs, in which Katherine Harmon describes how a speaker at a recent TED talk used a 3-D printer to create a kidney. A century from now, will the sight of an amputee be a rarity, with cybernetic limbs controlled by thought and nearly indistinguishable from the biological ones? Perhaps most people will have their genomes read for indications of future disease and take steps to prevent it – or even to cure inherited disorders. Will we replace some drugs with tiny machines, fanning out inside the body to repair damage? As exciting as these possibilities are to extend both the length and quality of life, immortality – or at least agelessness – may be forever out of our reach. As Thomas Kirkwood notes in his piece, Why Can't We Live Forever? death might be the price we pay for our complex biology. Even so, the doctors of a century past would surely be impressed by what medical science has accomplished in the past hundred years: antibiotics, organ transplants and the elimination of smallpox, to name but a few. The next century should be equally impressive, and with the various types of new technologies on the horizon, many of us have a good chance of seeing it happen. |
nextprof nexus: International Law and the Classification of Conflicts Elizabeth Wilmshurst, 2012-08-02 This book comprises contributions by leading experts in the field of international humanitarian law on the subject of the categorisation or classification of armed conflict. It is divided into two sections: the first aims to provide the reader with a sound understanding of the legal questions surrounding the classification of hostilities and its consequences; the second includes ten case studies that examine practice in respect of classification. Understanding how classification operates in theory and practice is a precursor to identifying the relevant rules that govern parties to hostilities. With changing forms of armed conflict which may involve multi-national operations, transnational armed groups and organized criminal gangs, the need for clarity of the law is all-important. The case studies selected for analysis are Northern Ireland, DRC, Colombia, Afghanistan (from 2001), Gaza, South Ossetia, Iraq (from 2003), Lebanon (2006), the so-called war against Al-Qaeda, and future trends. The studies explore the legal consequences of classification particularly in respect of the use of force, detention in armed conflict, and the relationship between human rights law and international humanitarian law. The practice identified in the case studies allows the final chapter to draw conclusions as to the state of the law on classification. |
nextprof nexus: Topological Structures in Ferroic Materials Jan Seidel, 2016-02-12 This book provides a state-of-the art overview of a highly interesting emerging research field in solid state physics/nanomaterials science, topological structures in ferroic materials. Topological structures in ferroic materials have received strongly increasing attention in the last few years. Such structures include domain walls, skyrmions and vortices, which can form in ferroelectric, magnetic, ferroelastic or multiferroic materials. These topological structures can have completely different properties from the bulk material they form in. They also can be controlled by external fields (electrical, magnetic, strain) or currents, which makes them interesting from a fundamental research point of view as well as for potential novel nanomaterials applications. To provide a comprehensive overview, international leading researches in these fields contributed review-like chapters about their own work and the work of other researchers to provide a current view of this highly interesting topic. |
nextprof nexus: Ecohumanism Robert B. Tapp, 2002 Humanists are sometimes accused of being so focused on the human race that they ignore the environment and other species. This book is designed to address these criticisms. The contributors, all humanists in the naturalistic tradition, show that in fact humanism as a worldview has much to offer environmentalism. Since humanists are committed to working for a global community in which all humans can flourish, they are as concerned about ecological degradation as environmentalists. But in regard to what should be done about environmental problems, humanists do not hesitate to use the best scientific information and technology to reclaim the natural world while ensuring the welfare of all human beings. Humanists stress that science and technology must be used responsibly and that human beings must learn to give up destructive ideological fantasies, whether political or religious. The contributors are Vern L. Bullough, Gwen Whitehead Brewer, Richard Gilbert, Michael J. Kami, Gerald Larue, Timothy J. Madigan, Sarah Oelberg, Don Page, Howard B. Radest, Philip J. Regal, Andreas Rosenberg, Harvey Sarles, David Schafer, John M. Swomley, Robert B. Tapp, Michael Werner, and Carol Wintermute. |

nextprof nexus: RNA Damage and Repair Ioly Kotta-Loizou, 2022-07-06 Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a macromolecule that plays a central role in cell physiology: RNA molecules act as intermediates between the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), where genetic information is stored, and proteins, which perform the necessary functions within the cell. Traditionally, the structural and functional properties of RNA are closely linked to gene expression. However, RNA-based enzymes, called ribozymes, are also involved in catalysis and small RNAs regulate key cellular processes, such as cell growth, division, differentiation, aging and death. RNA is a sensitive macromolecule that can be easily damaged by environmental conditions (ultraviolet radiation, oxidative stress) and biological factors (ribonucleases, ribotoxins, CRISPR-Cas systems). Therefore, cells have developed mechanisms to protect and/or repair RNA molecules. This book presents an overview of the biology of RNA damage, protection and repair in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Individual chapters cover the expression regulation, enzymology and physiological role of such systems, and link them to important human diseases such as cancer and degenerative diseases. |
