Comme telle, elle est la condition d’existence de l’humanité : depuis les simples besoins vitaux, jusqu’aux plus hautes fonctions de la pensée en passant par l’imagination, le rêve, etc. Inversement, la Terre n’est pas un simple lieu indifférent ou une réalité physico-chimique sans mémoire. Elle porte en elle les archives vivantes de l’histoire humaine et de tous les êtres vivants. La corrélation entre l’homme et la Terre est fondamentale. La vie et le devenir de la Terre, trop souvent occultés par le voile de la surexploitation, nous concernent, nous, les hommes. Notre présent et notre avenir dépendent d’elle, car sa dégradation entraîne la nôtre. Nous sommes devenus des acteurs majeurs des transformations considérables – les changements globaux – qui l’affectent. Il nous appartient de prendre la mesure de ce que nous faisons ou défaisons afin d’adopter une autre voie.
