bcgs softball: The Topeka School Ben Lerner, 2019-10-01 A NEW YORK TIMES, TIME, GQ, Vulture, and WASHINGTON POST TOP 10 BOOK of the YEAR ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVOURITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award Shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize Winner of the Hefner Heitz Kansas Book Award From the award-winning author of 10:04 and Leaving the Atocha Station, a tender and expansive family drama set in the American Midwest at the turn of the century, hailed by Maggie Nelson as Ben Lerner's most discerning, ambitious, innovative, and timely novel to date. Adam Gordon is a senior at Topeka High School, class of '97. His mother, Jane, is a famous feminist author; his father, Jonathan, is an expert at getting lost boys to open up. They both work at a psychiatric clinic that has attracted staff and patients from around the world. Adam is a renowned debater, expected to win a national championship before he heads to college. He is one of the cool kids, ready to fight or, better, freestyle about fighting if it keeps his peers from thinking of him as weak. Adam is also one of the seniors who bring the loner Darren Eberheart--who is, unbeknownst to Adam, his father's patient--into the social scene, to disastrous effect. Deftly shifting perspectives and time periods, The Topeka School is the story of a family, its struggles and its strengths: Jane's reckoning with the legacy of an abusive father, Jonathan's marital transgressions, the challenge of raising a good son in a culture of toxic masculinity. It is also a riveting prehistory of the present: the collapse of public speech, the trolls and tyrants of the New Right, and the ongoing crisis of identity among white men.
bcgs softball: Marriage Equality William N. Eskridge, Jr., Christopher R. Riano, 2020-08-18 The definitive history of the marriage equality debate in the United States, praised by Library Journal as beautifully and accessibly written. . . . An essential work.” As a legal scholar who first argued in the early 1990s for a right to gay marriage, William N. Eskridge Jr. has been on the front lines of the debate over same‑sex marriage for decades. In this book, Eskridge and his coauthor, Christopher R. Riano, offer a panoramic and definitive history of America’s marriage equality debate. The authors explore the deeply religious, rabidly political, frequently administrative, and pervasively constitutional features of the debate and consider all angles of its dramatic history. While giving a full account of the legal and political issues, the authors never lose sight of the personal stories of the people involved, or of the central place the right to marry holds in a person’s ability to enjoy the dignity of full citizenship. This is not a triumphalist or one‑sided book but a thoughtful history of how the nation wrestled with an important question of moral and legal equality.

This symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany and was held September 17-19, 1979, in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany. According to Graham Richards [Nature 278, 507 (1979)] the Third Age of Quantum Chemistry has started-;-where the results of quantum chemical calculations have become so accurate and reliable that they can guide the experimentalists in their search for the unknown. The particular example highlighted by Richards was the suc cessful prediction and subsequent identification of the relative energies, transition probabilities and geometries of the lowest triplet states of acetylene. The theoretical predictions were based chiefly upon the work of three groups: Kammer [Chern. Phys. Lett. ~, 529 (1970)] had made qualitatively correct predictions; Demoulin [Chern. Phys. 11, 329 (1975)] had calculated the potential energy curves for the two lowest triplet states (3 and 3 ) of B A acetylene; and Wetmore and Schaefer III [J. Chern. Phys. ~~ 1648 (1978)] had determined the geometries of the cis (3B and ~A ) and the trans (3B and 3A ) isomers of these two sta~es. Inua 2 2 guided search, Wendt, Hunziker and Hippler [J. Chern. PHys. 70, 4044 (1979)] succeeded in finding the predicted near infrared absorption of the cis triplet acetylene (no corresponding absorp tion for the trans form was found, which is in agreement with theory), and the resolved structure of the spectrum confirmed the predicted geometries conclusively.

bcgs softball: Alphaherpesviruses Sandra Knowles Weller, 2011 Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.
