psu ee: The Acute Management of Surgical Disease Martin D. Zielinski, Oscar Guillamondegui, 2022-09-15 Emergency General Surgery has become a cornerstone of Acute Care Surgery over the past decade. Once the scope of community general surgeons, the growing complexity of patients with acute surgical diseases has increasingly driven their care to tertiary referral centers. The aging population confounds this problem further as these patients present with more complex comorbidities, life-threatening physiology, and progressively severe anatomic disease severity. To ensure better outcomes, the practice has evolved to focus on evidence-based practice management guidelines in order to standardize care and optimize outcomes. The purpose of this text is to be a comprehensive volume for patients with acute surgical diseases. There will be three sections, each comprised of multiple chapters. The first section will be a comprehensive analysis of the background of Emergency General Surgery. The goal of this section will be to provide the reader background into the acute surgical practice and to introduce the reader to the important concepts discussed in the remainder of the textbook. The second section will be the largest and will discuss specific acute surgical diseases. Individual chapters will outline the diagnostic approach, current treatment standards, operative approaches, and expected outcomes with an emphasis on practice management guideline implementation into practice. As acute surgical diseases and surgical critical care are integral to each other, the last section will be Critical Care for the Acute Care Surgeon. These topics will focus on the critical care concepts essential to surgeons who care for acute diseases. This comprehensive text is targeted to any surgeon who takes emergency call for any of the listed diseases including community and referral general and vascular surgeons. In addition, this would be an excellent resource for all general surgery residents. Lastly, this would also serve as a resource to intensivists who care for acute surgical patients.

Glattfelder, 2007-07-13 Physical, safety and technological constraints suggest that control actuators can neither provide unlimited amplitude signals nor unlimited speed of reaction. The techniques described in this book are useful for industrial applications in aeronautical or space domains, and in the context of biological systems. Such methods are well suited for the development of tools that help engineers to solve analysis and synthesis problems of control systems with input and output constraints.

psu ee: Engineering Design with Polymers and Composites, Second Edition James C. Gerdeen, PhD, PE, Ronald A.L. Rorrer, PhD, PE, 2011-12-19 Engineering Design with Polymers and Composites, Second Edition continues to provide one of the only textbooks on the analysis and design of mechanical components made from polymer materials. It explains how to create polymer materials to meet design specifications. After tracing the history of polymers and composites, the text describes modern design concepts, such as weight-to-strength ratio and cost-to-strength ratio, for selecting polymers and composites for design applications. It also presents computer methods for choosing polymer materials from a database, for optimal design, and for laminated plate design. New to the Second Edition This edition rearranges many chapters and adds a significant amount of new material. Composites are now covered in two chapters, instead of one. This edition also includes entirely new chapters on polymer fusing and other assembly techniques, rapid prototyping, and piezoelectric polymers. Suitable for mechanical and civil engineering students as well as practicing engineers, this book helps readers get an edge in the rapidly changing electromechanical industry. It gives them a fundamental foundation for understanding phenomena that they will encounter in real-life applications or through subsequent study and research.

psu ee: Hybrid Predictive Control for Dynamic Transport Problems Alfredo Nunez, Doris Saez, Cristián E. Cortés, 2012-10-03 Hybrid Predictive Control for Dynamic Transport Problems develops methods for the design of predictive control strategies for nonlinear-dynamic hybrid discrete-/continuous-variable systems. The methodology is designed for real-time applications, particularly the study of dynamic transport systems. Operational and service policies are considered, as well as cost reduction. The control structure is based on a sound definition of the key variables and their evolution. A flexible objective function able to capture the predictive behaviour of the system variables is described. Coupled with efficient algorithms, mainly drawn from area of computational intelligence, this is shown to optimize performance indices for real-time applications. The framework of the proposed predictive control methodology is generic and, being able to solve nonlinear mixed integer optimization problems dynamically, is readily extendable to other industrial processes. The main topics of this book are: · hybrid predictive control (HPC) design based on evolutionary multiobjective optimization (EMO); · HPC based on EMO for dial-a-ride systems; and · HPC based on EMO for operational decisions in public transport systems. Hybrid Predictive Control for Dynamic Transport Problems is a comprehensive analysis of HPC and its application to dynamic transport systems. Introductory material on evolutionary algorithms is presented in summary in an appendix. The text will be of interest to control and transport engineers working on the operational optimization of transport systems and to academic researchers working with hybrid systems. The potential applications of the generic methods presented here to other process fields will make the book of interest to a wider group of researchers, scientists and graduate students working in other control-related disciplines.
