david raccis: Contemporary Italian Narrative and 1970s Terrorism David Ward, 2017-02-13 This book is about literary representations of the both left- and right-wing Italian terrorism of the 1970s by contemporary Italian authors. In offering detailed analyses of the many contemporary novels that have terrorism in either their foreground or background, it offers a “take” on postmodern narrative practices that is alternative to and more positive than the highly critical assessment of Italian postmodernism that has characterized some sectors of current Italian literary criticism. It explores how contemporary Italian writers have developed narrative strategies that enable them to represent the fraught experience of Italian terrorism in the 1970s. In its conclusions, the book suggests that to meet the challenge of representation posed by terrorism fiction rather than fact is the writer’s best friend and most effective tool. |
david raccis: Incarceration and Regime Change Christian G. De Vito, Ralf Futselaar, Helen Grevers, 2016-10-01 Political instability is nearly always accompanied by fuller prisons, and this was particularly true during the “long” Second World War, when military mobilization, social disorder, wrenching political changes, and shifting national boundaries swelled the ranks of the imprisoned and broadened the carceral reach of the state. This volume brings together theoretically sophisticated, empirically rich studies of key transitional moments that transformed the scope and nature of European prisons during and after the war. It depicts the complex interactions of both penal and administrative institutions with the men and women who experienced internment, imprisonment, and detention at a time when these categories were in perpetual flux. |

david raccis: Molecular Structures and Dimensions O. Kennard, D.G. Watson, Frank H. Allen, S.A. Bellard, 2013-04-17 This volume is the fourteenth classified bibliography of organic, organometallic and metal complex crystal structures prepared by the Cambridge Crystallo graphic Data Centre and published jointly with the International Union of Crystallography. The previous thirteen volumes covered the years 1935-81; the majority of references in the present volume pertain to structure analyses reported in the literature during 1981 and 1982. A few structures reported prior to 1981 and omitted in earlier volumes are also included. Volume 14 contains 4094 references to 4001 distinct chemical compounds with 2162 cross-references. Some 90% of these references were obtained by direct in-house scanning of 51 major journals; the remaining material was located by searching Chemical Abstracts and Bulletin Signa/etique. The table below summarizes the cut-off dates for the 25 direct-scan journals yielding most entries in Volume 14. The fully classified Chemical Diagram Index, first presented in Volume 13, is continued here. Volume 14 contains 3912 chemical structural diagrams, repre senting 98% of the compounds. The reasons for the omission of some diagrams are noted in the Introduction. This new index provides a rapid visual overview of compounds studied in 1981-82 and will, we hope, add greatly to the usefulness of the annual Bibliographies. The textual indexes in Volume 14 continue the system established in Volumes 9-13 and in the special volume Guide to the Literature 1935-76. The latter volume presents a set of cumulative indexes to the contents of Bibliographic Volumes 1-8. |

david raccis: Soft Matter Self-assembly C. N. Likos, Francesco Sciortino, Primož Ziherl, E. Zaccarelli, 2016 Self-assembly is one of the key concepts in contemporary soft condensed matter. It is an umbrella term which encompasses the various modes of spontaneous organization of micrometer-and submicrometer-sized particles into ordered structures of various degrees of complexity, yet it often relies on remarkably simple interactions and mechanisms. Self-assembly is one of the key principles used by nature to construct living matter, where it frequently takes place in a hierarchical fashion. This book contains the lectures from the Enrico Fermi summer school: Soft Matter Self-assembly, held in Varenna, Italy, in June and July 2015. The primary aim of the school was to cover the most exciting modern aspects of self-assembly in soft condensed matter physics, and to enable Ph.D. students and postdocs to engage with some of the most exciting and current topics in the physics of colloids through a series of mini-courses and seminars hosted by leading figures in the field.Subjects covered include: colloids with directional bonding; pathways of self-organization; self-assembly hydrodynamics; polymer structure and dynamics; liquid-crystal colloid dispersions; and self-organizing nanosystems. The proceedings also include two reprints from Reviews of Modern Physics, and will be of interest to both students and experts in the field. |

david raccis: The Evolving Animal Orchestra Henkjan Honing, 2019-03-05 A music researcher's quest to discover other musical species. Even those of us who can't play a musical instrument or lack a sense of rhythm can perceive and enjoy music. Research shows that all humans possess the trait of musicality. We are a musical species—but are we the only musical species? Is our musical predisposition unique, like our linguistic ability? In The Evolving Animal Orchestra, Henkjan Honing embarks upon a quest to discover if humans share the trait of musicality with other animals. Charles Darwin believed that musicality was a capacity of all animals, human and nonhuman, with a clear biological basis. Taking this as his starting point, Honing—a music cognition researcher—visits a series of biological research centers to observe the ways that animals respond to music. He has studied scientists' accounts of Snowball, the cockatoo who could dance to a musical beat, and of Ronan, the sea lion, who was trained to move her head to a beat. Now Honing will be able to make his own observations. Honing tests a rhesus monkey for beat perception via an EEG; performs a listening experiment with zebra finches; considers why birds sing, and if they intend their songs to be musical; explains why many animals have perfect pitch; and watches marine mammals respond to sounds. He reports on the unforeseen twists and turns, doubts, and oversights that are a part of any scientific research—and which point to as many questions as answers. But, as he shows us, science is closing in on the biological and evolutionary source of our musicality. |

Reference to a single discourse – that of postmodernism – no longer suffices as a means to sum up the contemporary Italian book market. Rather, we see a renewed tendency towards literary realism, that is to say 'serious' literature that aspires to represent and criticize a current extratextual world by narrating factual events or plausible occurrences. However, realistic literature is literature nonetheless and, by that token, art; it can take on metaphorical, symbolist or self-referential character in order to optimise strategies of depiction, achieve new insights or give voice to poetological problems. This study analyses the different manifestations of these tendencies on the basis of examples drawn from the works of Ammaniti, Desiati and Saviano. |
