frontiers cardiovascular medicine impact factor: Sex differences and cardiovascular therapeutics Sheng Wu, Xiaoyue Pan , Mohsin Khan, Hong Wang, Xiaofeng Yang, Flavia Franconi , Ilaria Campesi, 2024-06-05 Scientific evidence from both preclinical, and clinical studies indicates that male and female patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) exhibit different clinical, epidemiological, and pathological characteristics, with sexually dimorphic biological factors exhibiting a significant influence in the development of CVD and therapeutic responses. Sexually dimorphic physiology that contributes to sex differences in cardiovascular therapeutic responses may include; immune responses, cardio-renal health, the blood-brain barrier, coronary atherosclerosis pathology, complications of COVID-19 infections, and the interplay between psychological factors and sedentarism. Furthermore, current knowledge indicates the role of hormonal regulation has a significant impact in sex-specific differences across the clinical cardiology field. The National Institute of Health (NIH) previously adopted a policy to encourage researchers to consider sex as a biological variable (SABV) as well as Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). In order to promote sexual dimorphic cardiovascular therapeutic development, we have organized this special topic “Sex Differences and Cardiovascular Therapeutics” to provide a scientific forum for cardiovascular scientists and clinicians to present their newest findings in characterizing sex differences in cardiovascular therapeutics. Potential areas of research within this collection may include, but are not limited to: 1) Different outcomes and responses to drug treatment in cardiovascular disease between male and female. 2) Mechanisms of sexual dimorphic response and outcomes related to drug treatment of cardiovascular disease. 3) Sex hormones and their receptors in cardiovascular function in animal studies and clinical therapeutic applications. 4) Gender affirming hormone therapy and cardiovascular function. 5) Regulatory guidance for cardiovascular therapeutics in relation to sex-specific differences. |

Being science majors, the students have a limited background in philosophy and ethics. Most of the graduate students are employed at area research laboratories while also pursuing a Master of Science degree. Their practical day-to-day experience in scientific research is helpful in discussions of responsible conduct of research cases. Being aware of increased cases of misconduct the United States established the Office of Research Integrity (ORI). Their publication, Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research, defines misconduct as fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. Concern for the breach of public trust with repercussions in scientific funding has led to mandates for courses in ethics for students pursuing a scientific career. In addition, the Human Genome Project megaproject funded Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Research (www.genome.gov/ELSI/) recognizing that the genetic information produced by the project would come with applied ethical dilemmas. Teaching can be understood as conveying knowledge from generation to generation. Likewise systems of morality are collective acquisitions built up over millennia with social norms and values that aim to maintain social order. Research does not support the premise that knowing the rules of conduct will prevent misconduct. Indeed, compliance with rules can give a false sense of security, especially if the ethical reasoning grounding the rules is not understood. Therefore, I try to sketch a path through the potential phases and avenues of a scientific career, imagining that a person may do basic research, serve on ethics committees, and engage the public in ethical use of new advances in genetics. As a result the content of this text is divided into three parts. The first part deals with foundational material on science and ethics and cases that highlight proper scientific professional conduct. The second part deals with clinical research through which a research discovery is moved to the bedside of patients and the ethical parameters of the transition. The third part sketches the ethical dilemmas evolving from progress in genetic information to clinical applications. Helping students find a moral compass, a grounding of why one ought to behave in ethical ways in their profession and more generally in life is challenging. Doing so increases their awareness and mine of potential dilemmas and how to deal with them ethically. |

Phillippi, Elena Aikawa, 2019-05-15 This Research Topic celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant performed in December of 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa. Cardiovascular researchers met in South Africa in December 2017 to commemorate this event, presenting an opportune time to reflect on the achievements of applied cardiovascular research and highlight forthcoming technology developments that will shape the future of cardiovascular medicine. The clinical breakthrough in 1967 offered hope to many patients suffering with cardiac complications, and these life-saving surgeries continue to have a tremendous impact. Tissue shortages, surgical risks, and complications due to improper host-transplant tissue interactions, however, limit the utility of heart transplants to the most severe cases of cardiac morbidity. Recent advances have yielded mechanistic insight into the factors that control cardiovascular tissue maintenance and remodeling. The field of regenerative medicine seeks to control these factors to promote in situ tissue regeneration or engineered tissue replacement. These exciting new technologies could lead to a renaissance in the treatment of many cardiovascular diseases, just as the realization of heart transplantation 50 years ago. In this Research Topic, researchers and clinicians from regenerative medicine and applied cardiovascular biology provide literature reviews and original manuscripts to demonstrate the trajectory of cardiovascular medicine. More specifically, practicing art-based activities was demonstrated to contribute to core determinants of health, to play a key role in health promotion and prevention—especially with regard to the onset of mental illness and age-related physical decline—and to assist in acute and end-of-life care. This report also underscored, first, a lack of robust data on art’s health benefits, meaning data obtained with gold-standard experimental study designs (i.e., randomized control trials) and second, that certain topics (e.g., social health) and populations (e.g., older community dwellers) have been underexamined. In addition, little is known about both the mechanisms of art’s health benefits and how to implement an art-based activity for health purposes in practice. |
