glenville stop and shop: Glenville , 2005 Glenville recounts the rich and varied history of the town on the north side of the Mohawk River that crowns Schenectady County. Long before it became an incorporated town, Glenville was the site of the last great struggles between the Mohawk and Mohican Indians for control of the Mohawk Valley, the region's first European settlement (1661), and numerous raids and encampments during the colonial wars of the 18th century. From farming to factories and railroads to roadhouses, Glenville is a compelling look at the architecture, culture, industry, and economic forces integral to the lives of residents past, present, and future. |
glenville stop and shop: A Song in the Night Shayne Powell, 2013-05-06 A Song in the Night is a verse-by-verse devotional commentary of a true story. Of a sensual, marital, love story. Of a shepherd married to a shepherdess, probably Abishag of I King's 1 and 2 and a seducer who would distract the girl's attention from her husband-lover, her Savior. Solomon is the culprit here for these events took place during his time of grievous, spiritual demise. A time recorded when God Himself pled for the king's spiritual renewal. Captive in Solomon's harem, too, the Daughters of Jerusalem constantly witness the girl's solvent testimony - one of watching, waiting, praying for rescue via her husband-lord's soon return. They become increasingly aware that the girl's husband is Messiah to her and eventually laud the truth of it themselves. A reunion ensues later as Shepherd and Bride return together to celebrate with The Daughters portending the prophetic Dance of Mahanaim, that is -of two camps. A time yet future when the Judeo-Christian ethic will joyously become one ethic, one ethos, one epoch! Israel and The Church together, forever, happily encompassing Jerusalem. While Yeshua/Shepherd graciously sits – the King! A Song in the Night will clearly present the “The Song”. A book which for centuries has been left unattended, not understood, not interpreted, and archived into abysmal ambiguity. Read on, for to the Lord all song of praise is due. For in Him our song begins and ends. |

glenville stop and shop: Ballots and Bullets James D. Robenalt, 2018 On July 23, 1968, police in Cleveland battled with black nationalists in a night of terror that saw 6 people killed and at least 15 wounded. The gun battle touched off days of heavy rioting. The question was whether the shootings were the result of a planned attack on white police, or a matter of self-defense by the nationalists. Mystery still surrounds how the urban warfare started and the role the FBI might have played in its origin. The confrontation was surprising given that Cleveland had just elected Carl Stokes, the first black mayor of a major US city, who just four months earlier had kept peace in Cleveland the night that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Now his credibility and reputation lay in tatters--the leader of the black nationalists, Fred Ahmed Evans, had used Cleveland NOW! public funds to buy the rifles and ammunition used in the shootout. Ballots and Bullets looks at the roots of the violence and its political aftermath in Cleveland, a uniquely important city in the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Cleveland to raise money during his 1963 Birmingham campaign. A year later, Malcolm X appeared in the same east side church to deliver his most important speech: The Ballot or the Bullet. Dr. King represented integration, nonviolence and his Christian heritage; Malcolm X represented racial separation, armed self-defense and the Black Muslims. Fifty years later, the specter of race violence and police brutality still haunts the United States. The War on Poverty gave way to mass incarceration, and recently the Black Lives Matter revolution has been met by the alt-right counterrevolution. Answers are needed. |

Among scores of new discoveries, the book reveals the first stories and pictures ever published by the two, where the first Superman story really came from, the real inspiration for Lois Lane, the template for Superman's costume, and much, much more. These Americans have not passed the torch, but are clasping it with us, urging us to continue the work alongside them,”-Nikole Hannah-Jones More than 50 elders share their remarkable experiences of being Black in America in a collection of powerful photographs and interviews For so long, too many stories that reveal what it means and feels like to be Black in America have been overlooked outside Black communities. After these long years of racial reckonings and nascent awakenings, Lift Every Voice presents interviews with the oldest generation of Black Americans about their lives, their experiences, and the wisdom that can carry all of us to a better future. The 54 fascinating individuals—civil rights activists, hometown heroes, celebrities, and many others—include: • Andre de Shields, an actor, director, and choreographer who discusses the essential values and lessons his parents taught him • Clarice Freeman, an educator and community leader in Houston, Texas who speaks about how to live a long and fulfilling life • Fred Gray, a civil rights lawyer who represented Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin, also featured in the book, against disorderly conduct charges for their refusal to give up their bus seats to white passengers • Patti LaBelle a singer/songwriter who shares her thoughts on aging and her career as an internationally celebrated powerhouse singer • Faye Wattleton, a reproductive rights activist and the first African American and youngest president of Planned Parenthood who recounts her experience as a nurse and midwife in the 1960s The insightful interviews were conducted by a brilliant team, many of whom are rising Black journalists from historically Black colleges and universities, and the portraits were shot by a talented group of next generation Black photographers. Lift Every Voice is named after the James Weldon Johnson poem and hymn Lift Every Voice and Sing, which is often referred to as the Black national anthem. Lift Every Voice is both a testament to the strength of the elders’ stories and a triumphant beginning for a new generation of Black journalists and photographers. |

glenville stop and shop: Living on the Edge Celine-Marie Pascale, 2021-07-28 For the majority of Americans, hard times have long been a way of life. Some work multiple low-wage jobs, others face the squeeze of stagnant wages and rising costs of living. Sociologist Celine-Marie Pascale talked with people across Appalachia, at the Standing Rock and Wind River reservations, and in the bustling city of Oakland, California. Their voices offer a wide range of experiences that complicate dominant national narratives about economic struggles. Yet Living on the Edge is about more than individual experiences. It's about a nation in a deep economic and moral crisis. It’s about the long-standing collusion between government and corporations that prioritizes profits over people, over the environment, and over the nation's well-being. It's about how racism, sexism, violence, and the pandemic shape daily experience in struggling communities. And, ultimately, it's a book about hope that lays out a vision for the future as honest as it is ambitious. Most people in the book are not progressives; none are radicals. They're hard-working people who know from experience that the current system is unsustainable. Across the country people described the need for a living wage, accessible health care, immigration reform, and free education. Their voices are worth listening to. |

glenville stop and shop: The Life and Death of a Rural American High School (1995) Deyoung Alan, 2017-12-22 Published in 1995 this book provides an account of a detailed research project focusing on a rural school in West Virginia. Researched from several social science perspectives the book strives to capture intersections between biography and history in a particular public school – Burnsville High and Middle school in Braxton County - that has been influenced by social, political, and economic forces, eventually leading to its closure. The author also discusses how the example of this school can be applied within the framework of American public education and Western culture itself. Based on research from unstructured interviews, oral histories, historical records, and intermittent fieldwork that took place between 1989 and 1992, the book provides an in-depth look at a specific school, offering a basis for discussing rural schools in general. It challenges the idea that bigger schools are better and more efficient schools in terms of the individual, the social life of the school, and the surrounding community, and considers the lack of scholarly accounts available on the issues, controversies, and social dynamics that surround these vital community matters. |
